The opening track makes you believe this is gonna be one of so many "punchy rock for teenagers" album, but don't be fooled: the album, except the first song, actually is about hard-rock with someting of a heavy-metal spirit lurking around. You will often think of this or that band of the 80's, but the Naughty Boys never go to the point of pointless copy and plagiarism. The final result is good, the album isn't so boring, but despite all its qualities something is always missing... and I'd say it's a real music personality. You could say it's something that can't be avoided in a style where nearly everything was written in the 80's, and at least do the Naughty Boys add something heavy/agressive that gives them a definitely modern sound while keeping their music deeply rooted 20 years behind. Most important of all, the overall album is very catchy, I dare you not to move around listening to Light of the Day or Runaway Train, for example! As I don't know their previous album, out in 2007, I cannot give any comment about their musical evolution. But I can say I hope they will find the subtility between "tribute to our roots" and "our musical personality" for their next album, because that really is the only thing they're missing to do something very good. This band started a long time ago after all: they took time to learn their job on the roads before entering any studio. And indeed these songs will most probably sound awesome in concerts, it's obvious when you're listening to this album. Yet when you're home, without the atmosphere of a concert, you can't "get into it" as well as you would do with lights off and people having fun around you. |
